Subject: [*] Brian's Sound Tool 1.2
This is an update to Brian's Sound Tool to add a little more flexibility
and usability features.
For those who came in late...
Brian's Sound tool is a small drag and drop sound coversion utility
designed mainly for transfering files between the Macintosh and Windoze.
It works under system 6 or 7, supporting the required Apple events under
system 7.
Output is a mac sound file if the input isn't from a mac, otherwise the
output is a Windoze file. Input can be either of those plus a bunch of
others like sound blaster .VOC files, Sun/NeXT .au, FSSD (either HCOM or
not), 8SVX, and AIFF files.
Some (basic) doco is included.
The program is free.
Enjoy

Subject: [*] CompRes 1.1
CompRes is a Programmer's tool which allows nearly transparent
runtime resource decompression. This means that you can-for example-
compress your PICT or other large resources at compile time and
have them decompressed at runtime.
CompRes is shareware and there is plenty of on-line help.
This application is a demo which shows you exactly how much disk space
you'll save by compressing your resources. And, although this demo is
System 7.0 dependent, the CompRes runtime decompression is quite robust
and works under System 6 and later (and probably under most of the older
system versions too!).
This version of the demo adds significant features including:
drag-n-drop, on-line help, an improved status window, and support for
Apple Events.
Check it out. The demo is free. You only pay if you actually use CompRes
in one of your projects.
And feel free to send me your questions and comments at:

Argus MeshMaker (TM) Pro Demo
Argus MeshMaker (TM) Pro is a general purpose finite element
& finite difference pre-processor and mesh generator,
including a Geographical Information System and an on screen
interactive digitizer.
MeshMaker is simple to use and involves a very short learning
curve. This simplicity is achieved by complying with the
Macintosh Graphical User Interface (GUI) standards
Argus MeshMaker (TM) Pro special features:
* Integrating auto mesh generation, mesh editing, with
navigation and orientation capabilities.
* Intuitive manipulation (editing & creation) of objects such
as meshes, elements, nodes and contours by click & drag
techniques.
* Mesh smoothing, renumbering and refinement.
* Automatic On-line validity checking of all user actions
according to user defined criteria.
* Incorporating geographic information system (GIS)
capabilities, implemented by multiple user definable
layers, allowing you to incorporate topography, material
properties, geographic information, etc., relate that
information to the mesh, and query about your nodes',
elements' or blocks' properties.
* Print on all Macintosh printers, and plot via Macintosh
plotter drivers.
* Hardware and System Requirements *
- Argus MeshMaker requires System 7 or higher.
- You will need a Macintosh with a math coprocessor.
- You will need at least one megabyte of free RAM for
MeshMaker, depending on the size of your projects.
- A Hard disk.
* On the Differences between MeshMaker Pro and MeshMaker *
MeshMaker Pro is intended for the engineer using both the
finite elements and the finite difference methods. MeshMaker
is intended for engineers using only the finite difference
method. When you purchase MeshMaker you receive the same
package as when purchasing MeshMaker Pro, but you will not be
able to save or export finite element meshes you create.

Subject: [*] Disk Charmer 2.0.6
Disk Charmer 2.0.x is a neat utility that lets you conveniently
initialize (or verify) floppy disks.
It _requires_ at least System 7 to run.
It has a nice, modeless interface.
Help Balloons are everywhere.
It supports drag&drop (with the required Apple Events).
It is able to create larger disks: you gain 8.5K on a 800K disk,
18.5K on a HD disk (if you keep one large file filling the disk,
such as a Compact Pro segment).
It is the first disk formatter supporting the handy "Undo" feature
we all know and love.
It is the first disk formatter able to initialize and verify disks
(hold your breath) **in background**. To access this feature, you need
the Thread Manager Extension from Apple Computer.
(Currently, the Thread Manager is quite buggy, so be prepared to remove
it from your Extensions folder.)
It has even more features... but I am sure you are already impressed!
New from version 2.0.5:
now the ~Erase disk~ option **works** with HD disks.
A bug fix introduced a new bug: shame, shame!
Enjoy yourself and remember the shareware fee!

Glidel 1.2
July 19, 1993 by Gilles Berkovitch <GB136@calvacom.fr>
Glidel 1.2 is a freeware INIT to Drag-and-Drop icons on Apple Menu Items
or File Menu Items THAT WORK EXCLUSIVELY WITH SYSTEM 7.x (and beyond ?).
Glidel 1.1 is derived from Fred Monroe's "Dropple Menu" that worked for
System 7.0 and 7.0.1 but broke under 7.1.
The action performed depends on where you drag-and-drop a selection to:
-- The Apple Menu Icon: move the selection to the AppleMenuItems folder.
-- A Folder in the Apple Menu: move the selection to that folder [or
copy it if the Option key is pressed].
-- An Application in the Apple Menu: same as drag-and-dropping the file
on the application's icon.
-- An Item in the File Menu: same as selecting the file in the finder
then choosing a File Menu Item [One of: Open, Print, Get Info, Duplicate
or Make Alias or Put Away].
New in version 1.2: now works under System 7.0, 7.0.1 and 7.1

Subject: [*] Greg's Buttons 3.1
Greg's Buttons v3.1 (21 July 1993) (c)1991-93 Gregory D. Landweber
REGISTRATION FEE: US $15 or UK L10 Internet: gdl1000@cus.cam.ac.uk
Greg's Buttons is a control panel that lets you customize the user interface
of a Macintosh running System 7. Greg's Buttons requires that your Mac
support color, so it won't work on the Plus, SE, Classic, or PowerBook 100.
It works fine with both color and gray-scale monitors, and although it will
still work on a black and white screen, the effect will not be as impressive.
Changes since v3.0
-----------------
o The buttons now look much nicer in 4-bit grayscale (16 shades of gray).
(I just got a PowerBook Duo 210 with a grayscale screen, and I love it!)
o The "New Folder" button that appears in some "Save as..." dialog boxes
is now colorized so that it matches the rest of the buttons in the box.
o Fixed the various conflicts with Now Compress, Timbuktu, Spaceward Ho!,
MasterJuggler (version 1.58), and MacMoney.
o Improved the appearance of the push buttons in the ResEdit DLOG editor.
o The dialog box colorization feature is now more robust in its choice of
dialog boxes. In particular, it will colorize movable modal dialog boxes
(such as the Finder "Find" and progress boxes) as well as the "Open..."
and "Save..." boxes even with Dialog View installed.
o The exclusion list for the dialog box colorization feature now supports
desk accessories as well as applications, and the list has been put in
the prefs file (so you will not have to reconstruct it when you install
a future version of Greg's Buttons).
o The documentation file contains updated contact information (I'll be in
England for another year, but my address will change. I still prefer to
receive shareware registrations at my address in the USA, though).
Notes
-----
o Directory Assistance II will prevent Greg's Buttons from colorizing the
"New Folder" button that appears in some "Save As..." dialog boxes.
o Versions 1.57c and earlier of MasterJuggler are not compatible with the
System Font Substitution feature of Greg's Buttons. ALSoft has fixed
this problem in MasterJuggler 1.58. Contact ALSoft to obtain an upgrade.
o Now Fun! may be a user interface enhancement package with a philosophy
similar to that of Greg's Buttons, but it is NOT a substitute for Greg's
Buttons. Users will find that the two programs complement each other,
and the only overlap between the two is the menu colorization feature
(for which I recommend you use Now Fun! instead of Greg's Buttons).
List of Features
---------------
o Replaces the standard flat black and white push buttons, check boxes,
and radio buttons with tasteful 3-D color ones. These buttons are
designed to complement the windows and scroll bars in the System 7
interface, and in particular they use the color tints that you can
select in the "Color" control panel. You can choose from two styles
of push buttons and three styles of radio buttons and check boxes.
o Lets you select the background color of dialog boxes, menus (both
the text and background colors), and Finder windows.
o Substitutes a font of your choice (chosen from Palatino and two
versions of Helvetica) for Chicago as your system font.
o Colorizes the mini icons (the smallest size that you can select
in the "Views" control panel) in Finder list views (View by Name,
Date, Size, Kind, Label, Version, Comment, Astrological Sign, etc).
o Colorizes the stop sign, caution, and note alert icons.

Subject: [*] hpopup-menu-314.hqx
Here is version 3.1.4 of my HierPopup stack and external command. It fixes
the last known bug, er, limitation of this external.
This is the world's premiere popup menu XFCN. It includes features not
found in any other external and is one of the only externals that allows
arbitrarily deep hierarchical popup menus (through the use of MENU
resources).
The list of way cool features:
* Regular popup menus
* Hierarchical popup menus
* No limit on number of menu items
* 300 Hierarchical menus
* Uses the itemDelimiter (so you can have commas in the menus)
* Pops up at specified items, drops down, or whatever
* Use any character to check items
* Can select menu items even if they have submenus
* Can use any font or size desired
* Menus items can be Bold, Shadow, Underline & Italic
* Use icons, color icons & SICNs
* Can use any and all metacharacters in menu items
* Dynamic resource menus (like FONT and Apple menus)
* MENU resources
* Arbitrarily deep menus (using MENU resources)
* Free for noncommercial use
* $25 commercial licence

This is the latest version of HyperDecisionTree. It fixes a serious bug

For those of you who have never used HyperDecisionTree, it is a
non-inferential expert system shell which allows an expert to
create a decision tree of their knowledge and then save the
decision tree as a separate stack in order to give to users in need
of the expertise contained within the stack. The stack primarily
serves as an overview of the decision tree, allowing the expert to

IConArtist is a program for replacing the standard icons in the System file
without having to dabble with ResEdit. Unfortunately, there's no editing

IConArtist comes with a replacement trash can icon (a very well done wicker

I am not the author, I'm ony submitting this because the he doesn't seem to

Subject: [*] Monitor Switch 1.0.1
DESCRIPTION
Monitor Switch is an application for the Macintosh which allows you to
switch resolutions on your multisync monitor without the hassle of changing
the cable that is connected to the built-in video. It is similar to
DPI-on-the-fly and Radius Resolutions, but it is more compatible with other
software (it is an application rather than an INIT/CDEV, and it doesn't
patch any traps).
Monitor Switch currently works on the Centris and Quadra families of
computers. It should work on any future Macintoshes with similar built-in
video hardware.
NEW IN VERSION 1.0.1
This release adds monitor files for the Quadra 800 and fixes a bug which
causes a crash on incompatible Macs.

Subject: [*] NumberCrunch Demo
Number Crunch II is a fabulous programmable calculator, especially for
science and engineering, written by Jim Mahoney of the Physics Department
of Marlboro College. The real thing goes for $85; this upload is a demo of
the non-math chip version. It is fully functional; it differs from the real
thing only by periodically putting up obnoxious reminders with even more
obnoxious pauses. But you can test all its features, including saving and
printing. Runs under all system versions from 6.0.4 up.
To call it a programmable calculator really understates its capabilities.
It contains a powerful yet fairly intuitive and forgiving Pascal-derived
programming language, with DO-Loops, IF statements, functions (even
recursive ones), in brief: The Works. It also makes nice plots of your
results. One of its remarkable features is that it can handle numbers with
attached units, like 1 cm, 10 kg, etc., on both input and output. You can
teach it that 2.54 cm = 1 inch, or that 1 eV = 1.602E-19 Joule, and once
taught the conversions, it will handle your inputs in whatever units you
give it have taught it. A must for physicists and the like.
Just download the thing, and see for yourself!
Standard disclaimers; I'm just a VERY happy user.

Subject: [*] Obolus 1.0 -- enhances the Charon mailer for Fidonet
Obolus 1.0 is a mail program, designed to complement the Charon
mailer program, which was posted to sumex-aim recently.
Charon is designed to work with a "reader" program (eg, CounterPoint
or Alice), to allow a Mac user to operate as a Fido "point", calling
into a Fido hub to pick up and deliver mail and news, using the
Fido file transmission protocols.
Obolus is an adjunct to Charon, which allows Charon to properly
extract the outgoing mail and news from CounterPoint, including
the ability to compress outgoing mail. Use of Obolus allows
Charon and CounterPoint to function as a fully integated "point"
package.
Both Obolus and Charon may be freely distributed and used.

You can open any number of documents at the same time, the only

the application itself. Finally, Style now fully supports
the Claris XTND architecture: you can import and export
documents in various word processor formats, provided you have

Style takes advantage of most System 7 features and user

Subject: [*] Suppl. Gestalt Selectors List
Goodday,
Here is the latest version (2.0) of the
Supplemental Gestalt Selectors List.
It includes the latest gestaltMachineType values, even from not yet
released Macs. Also selectors from new Apple software like AppleScript
and KanjiTalk7.
Small pieces of Gestalt related code were added.
replaces: /dev/info/gestalt-selectors-16.txt
archived as: /dev/info/gestalt-selectors-20.etx (notice the '.etx' suffix!)
Below is the part of the list about the changes since version 1.6:
I changed the whole layout of the list. The persons who read this list
without special software won't notice too much. But the new layout also
complies with the setext specs for use with EasyView (Macintosh) or
setext-viewer (UNIX). These allow you to build automatically an index and
step thru the chapters. You can find both on sumex-aim.stanford.edu in the
text directory. Thanks to Marco Piovanelli for pointing me to these
applications.
The jump from 1.6 to 2.0 is because it's the first full version
wrapped as setext and it's the first one which will appear in the
Macintosh Developer Forum (MACDEV) on CompuServe.
Some chapter and section names have changed, but not beyond recognition.
gestaltComponentMgr (cpnt) was previously listed as 'additional software',
but it is also installed by the System since version 7.1. So it is now
listed as 'System Software'.
Some other selectors were confirmed by Technical Notes I all went thru.
There is one new chapter: Kilo-liners. This is meant for very small pieces
of code related to gestalt. Lawrence D'Oliviero contributed
'GestaltSelectorZero' and direct calls to the Gestalt traps.
Mark Dawson provided new MachineType IDs and some info regarding the
MachineNameStr. It's included with the gestaltMachineType (mach) selector.

Nothing new there! RAM prices at our bookstore have gone up 100% in the
last week. The factory that blew up supplied raw materials in the manufacture
of chip casings. They supply 60% of all RAM manufacturers, and as such, RAM
prices will go up...
Check out this weeks MacWeek. It says :
"Spot-market RAM prices nearly doubled this month as torrid PC sales
continued to put a strain on supplies and a fire destroyed the Japanese
factory that makes most of the material used to encase chips
Mac memory modules were hardest hit; at Fry's Electronics in sunnyvale,
Calif.,
a 4-Mbyte module rose to $219 last week, an increase of $95"
And so on... The above snippet was reproduced without permission, but is
copyright 1993 Coastal Associates, L.P
No mention here of computer prices rising though. I would not expect Apple
to raise prices now, after two months of constant price drops and rebates.
I'll take the wait-and-see attitude (but I am ordering my Duo this week to
avoid any increases if they do actually happen!!! ;-) )
My $.02

Apparently, one of the major manufacturers of PLASTIC IC CASINGS (I forget the

(canadian). When I purchased more memory on saturday, july 24, it had
already jumped to $85/mb. On monday, I overheard a saleman quoting
$98/mb.
This is the lowest price that I have found. Some other places were
quoting up to $150/mb.
In other words, that Centris 650 with 8 mb of memory you wanted to buy
just went up by approx $800. (remember, this is the canadian prices,
so you can probably get a better price. Be sure to shop around, and the
prices will vary widely for the next month or so, as previous
inventories are used up.)
While Sumitomo has asked DOW chemical, among others, to help fill the
demand for epoxy resin, don't expect lower prices soon. The rumour is
that previous production levels will not be reached for 3 to 5 years.

Hi netters,
When I zapped the PRAM a couple of days ago, I also lost the bootup
sound with it on my Quadra 700. Yes, there was this little cdev around some
time ago with which one could switch between the bootup sound - and which
also showed the pricture which is in the ROM. - Unfortunately, this cdev
has disappeared from my harddisk. Since I like the second sound much better
(more decent) I tried to find it on sumex-aim - but did not have any luck.
I simply have forgotten the name of the cdev. Can anybody remember that
name?
Any comments will be appreciated. Thank you

More interestingly, America Online has started to split big messages,
which means that if you get a file mailed to you, you can piece it
back together rather than just losing everything after 25K. It's still
a bit of a pain, but at least people can subscribe to TidBITS on AOL

I just heard that Prodigy had opened a beta gateway at prodigy.com.
You just prepend the userid to that addresss. The trick is that Prodigy
users need new software and have to sign up to receive Internet email
at something called JUMP INTERNET. If you send them mail before they
have done this, they won't get your mail, but they will get a notice
telling them how to go about getting Internet access. No word on if
it costs anything yet. That's about all I know right now - I mentioned

Easiest way is to ask someone who is using AppleLink to expand the

>Here's the question: When we dial-in, using ARA, we can no

>sites, we are stuck in our network.
ARA uses AppleTalk protocols. To access sumex you use TCP/IP protocols. To
use TCP/IP through your AppleTalk only dial in connection you need to
switch your MacTCP control panel to MacIP instead of the direct connection.
Then you will need to have some gateway (such as a FastPath) convert the
MacIP into TCP/IP. Then it'll work fine.
AppleTalk is the only packet type that will go through the dialup link.
MacIP puts TCP/IP packets inside AppleTalk packets. Thus, via dialup,
you'll be able to speak TCP to sumex.

OK, Larry, I give up. You win. You're right. I'm wrong. Let's just agree to
disagree.
It seems to be impossible to explain to you the difference between a released
versioned product (Stuffit x.x) and the licensing of the compression
technology
itself. I *think* I can explain it; that AOL software, written in C,
incorporates the *technology*, not the *application*, so there's no "software
(Stuffit 3.x)" to keep up-to-date, other than revs of AOL's software, which
*is* updated every few weeks or months, and your software is automatically
updated the next time you sign on. But if that isn't clear, mea culpa. I also
don't seem to be able to adequately explain the difference between a problem
for you (stuffing a file) and a convenience for a 350,000 plus member base
(auto-unstuffing after a download). I *thought* I could explain it. But mea
culpa there too.
Actually, it's all pretty much moot at this point...Wayne has somebody else
doing the uploads anyway...

Subject: HP DeskWriter vs. ATM 3.0
Hi there,
I'm experiencing unpleasantness with ATM and my DeskWriter.
Although, come to think of it, PageMaker 4.2 may be at fault. I'm fishing
for information, and if you've got any, a solution.
Problem Number One, which is the most significant by far, is that
whenever I use any kind of tracking the character spacing gets thoroughly
munged. Characters run together and space far apart, spaces between words
vanish, and it just generally looks as though I set it for "Tracking:
Worst Imaginable".
Problem Number Two is the irritating "character shapes or line
spacing" preservation choice. I rather figured this was for display
purposes only, but it seems to have major effects on final output, as
well: with character shapes preserved, page length often changes by as
much as 25% (!), and with line length preserved I lose descenders. It
seems as though that shouldn't be.
Problem Number Three was a surprise: a text block, rotated 180
degrees, crashed the print drivers (and eventually the machine). Printing
the same document without rotating the text worked fine; printing it with
the text rotated but switched to a TrueType font also worked fine.
The BMUG newsletter says the DeskWriter works very well with ATM.
Are they talking about the same DeskWriter? The same ATM? Could these
problems be yet another drawback of the new and improved DW 4.0 drivers?
Any insight into these problems is more than welcome.
Thanks,
Bill Dickson

Subject: Mac IIx Power On
>We have a Mac IIx which we use as a SNA-PS server. This machine is sitting
in a remote location, and is not easily accessible. The problem occurs when
the A.C. power goes down for a while, after which the Mac will not power on
again. Newer Macs can be set to always power on by rotating the power
button at the back by 90 degrees, but the old Mac IIx doesn't have this
option.
>We're looking for some scheme to modify the power supply in such a way that
the Mac will always be switched on after a power-down.
The PowerSwitch LT is a device that can be used to control power to network
devices. There are two ways you can use the PowerSwitch with your server.
If you have access to the remote network you can attach a PowerSwitch LT to
a LocalTalk network at the remote site, connect it's ADB port to the SNA-PS
Server ADB port and then you can manually send a Power On command to the
PowerSwitch via AppleTalk. It will toggle on the ADB and thus power on the
Mac. If the server froze, you could toggle power to the server by running
it's power through the PowerSwitch power outlet (up to 20 amps).
A second way to use the PowerSwitch LT is to modify the HyperCard stack
that talks to the PowerSwitch to watch for the SNA-PS server. If the
HyperCard stack no longer sees the SNA-PS Server (using NBP lookups in the
stack) then the stack can talk to the PowerSwitch connected to the server,
power cycle the server and then restart it with the ADB command.
A third way to use the PowerSwitch LT is to give the SNA-PS server some
process that causes it to send packets out LocalTalk (I assume it is either
on ethernet or Token Ring) on a periodic basis (such as the Apple Internet
Router or Farallon's software router) and then configure the PowerSwitch to
watch for packets coming from the SNA-PS server. When the PowerSwitch no
longer sees packets coming from the SNA-PS server, it will toggle power to
the server and then hit the ADB to restart it.
The PowerSwitch LT is an intelligent networked power controller and you can
configure it to do quite a few things automatically, such as keep your
SNA-PS Server online. It also can be used for ARA users who wish to power
on their office Macintosh.

MacWEEK and InfoWorld this week... I don't believe there's anything
anyone can do, other than perhaps hold off on buying RAM for a bit.

Subject: SoundManager 3.0 [A]
Info-Mac #149 contained question about SoundManager 3.0. I do not know
all the answer but I have discovered some of the possibilities:
SoundManager 3.0 seems to be part of QuickTime 1.6.x
You do not need a new sound control panel to make use of SoundManager 3.0
(there may be a new sound control panel - I don't know).
To record sound from an audio CD, you need the QuickTime MoviePlayer:
Start the MoviePlayer and open a track on an audio CD. The Play button
will change into a Convert button. Select Option, and you will have
access to the Sound Manager 3.0 functions: select sample rate (44, 22 or 11
kHz), mono/stereo and 8 or 16 bits samples. Use the slider or time fields
to select the part of the track to be processed. You can use the Play button
to play CD-audio sound through the built-in speaker of your Mac.
The sound can be stored as an image-less QT movie.
Warning: creating a full stereo, 44 kHz 16 bits sound movie requires a lot
of disk space.
Note: this procedure works with the Apple CD-300 player. I do not know which
other CD players support this ...

Subject: Splitting Mac files (C)
With regard to Larry Wink's (fdmwink@ucfvm1.cc.ucf.edu) suggestion of
splitting a file's data fork using Splitter 3.0, can I just point out
that Splitter is slightly flawed in one respect: it doesn't keep to a
fixed line length. This means when you're splitting binhex, the first
and last lines of the segments won't be kept to whatever the usual number
of characters/line for binhex is; they'll be sliced at random. And this
could be a problem for certain binhex decoders. Thanks to our faithful
Backmod Gordon Watts for pointing this out to me

Subject: Stuffit, Deluxe or Lite?
Hi,
Thanks for the first answers I received about my help request about
buying a Powerbook.
Now a little related question: compressing a PB hard disk. A friend of
mine has bought Stuffit deluxe with Spacesaver saying it's safer than
AutoDoubler, TimesTwo, etc. I would try it too. I'm interested in
Spacesaver only because Stuffit Lite is cheaper than the Deluxe version.
Do you know if StuffIt Deluxe and Stuffit Lite have the *same*
compression rates? Is the price difference due only to script capability,
multiple archive handling and to SpaceSaver bundle or the Deluxe version
can compress *more* than the Lite version?
Please reply directly to me
Thanks in Advance,
Federico

Have you turned off bi-directional printing? The GDT PowerPrint docs
suggest this solution in their troubleshooting section.
Hope it helps...

Subject: System 7.1, MODE32, 32 bit enabler, Mathematica 2.2
About a week ago I posted a message saying that the combination of Mode 32,
System 7.1, and Mathematica 2.2 was incompatible. This was based upon
Mathematica 2.2 not launching after I put on MODE32 on line, and running OK
when I went to the 32 bit enabler. However, in Infomacv11-150.txt there was a
report that this combination is OK, so I went back to check and in fact the
problem, whatever it was, can not be reproduced. I also received some
interesting email from holst@diku.dk (Bo Holst-Christensen) which I include
below since I think it would be of general interest. I have edited his
message
slightly to reduce its length. I found of particular interest his explanation
towards the end of his message about why some people may be having problems
with the 32 bit enabler; apparently a complicated sequence of reboots is
needed to properly DEINSTALL MODE32, just DRAGGING it out of the Control Panel
folder DOES NOT WORK and can cause the 32 bit enabler to crash the system.
MESSAGE from holst@diku.dk follows:
I have seen press releases from both Apple and Connectix just after the
release
of System 7.1, stating that the combination of Mode 32 and System 7.1 was
unstable at best. The main problem is, that if both 32bit and VM are turned on
>From Mode 32, most machines will bomb during booting System 7.1, with most
disk
drivers - including Apples own. I have knowledge of at least one driver where
this is not the case, resulting in a user stating that another disk driver was
faulty, as he could not boot from that drive with Mode 32 on. I know from
experiance, that the Apple, Ontrack, Surf City, and FWB drivers bombs with
System 7.1 and Mode 32 with both 32bit and VM on. Connectix's quick fix was to
have the user shuffle the NuBus cards. This could in some (but not all)
situations solve the problem. As an SE/30 has no NuBus cards, there was no way
an SE/30 user could try to solve the problem. Connectix and Apple made a joint
press release stating that Apple (not Connectix) would come with a replacement
for Mode 32. The 32bit enabler is that fix. Both Apple and Connectix warns
against using Mode 32 with System 7.1.
When the 32bit enabler was released there was a lot of noice about the enabler
just not working. Later it turned out that the way most people installed the
32bit enabler resulted in the problems. Connectix has always plays tricks with
the PRAM and system file in some situations they also install a hidden init,
when rebooting or shutting down. The way the 32bit enabler was installed by
most people was that they just removed Mode 32 from and put the enabler in the
system folder. When the system is rebooted, the things left over from Mode 32
tries to find Mode 32, and when it cannot be found, the system is left in very
bad shape. The way to remove Mode 32 is to first turn everything off from the
Mode 32 control panel, reboot, remove Mode 32 from the system folder, reboot,
put the enabler into the system folder, reboot, turn 32bit/VM on, and finally
reboot to get 32bit/VM. In some situations you may even have to replace the
system. This is not Apples fault, but Connectix'.
If all you need is 32bit, or VM alone, Mode 32 will probably work with no
problems. Unfortunately the 32bit enabler also fixes a few other problems with
the II and IIx-IIcx-SE/30 ROMs. The fix I need is the fix to the SCSI driver,
so that I can boot from my external MO drive, without disabling the system on
my internal harddisk.

Think C 5.0.4 (an excellent product, btw) was recently obsoleted

package that includes all the functionality of Think C 6.0,
and includes a (rather buggy, from what I hear from
comp.sys.mac.programmer) C++ compiler as well.

Subject: Uploading and VAXing
Hi:
I passed the trials of fire in learning the finer points of downloading
software from the NET. However, my attempts at UPLOADING have been foiled
by the VAX. Using my mac running kermit, and running kermit on the vax I
tried to upload a small sound file test. I stuffed and binhexed and sent,
but I kept getting an error. The file was being truncated. Anyone know
how I can set the VAX to accept larger files. Or is it something as simple
as inserting line feeds into your doc (allright, so I'm reaching here...)
I got an error that said that the line was being truncated to 255? chars.
Whats the trick. and why don't I have a problem sending text files to the
VAX?

EBook is my answer to the growing collection of electronic text "front
ends" available for fee or free. Many of these front ends are based on
Hypercard, as is EBook. Where EBook differs, however, is in basic
philosophy. My goal was to create a simple, self-configuring stack that
would turn a plain text file into the electronic equivalent of a paperback
book: no frills, compact, and easy to read. You will not find elegant page
layout, provision for margin notes, or other special features. You will
find:
o Bookmarks you can set on each page.
o Simple text search.
o "Open where I quit!" A possibly unique feature that remembers the
page you were on when you quit and returns to that page when you next
startup.
For those of you travelling with PowerBooks or simply looking for a way to
read the growing number of fine works becoming available as plain text
files, I hope EBook provides a simple way to enjoy yourself.
EBook is implemented using Hypercard 2.1
EBook is freeware. However, EBook is NOT released into the public domain.
I reserve all rights to the layout and script features. No third party may
use EBook in whole or in part to produce a library of works for sale at any
price except minimal cost to defray the expense of materials and handling.
This explicitly excludes companies such as EduCorp that sell collections of
free and shareware for a fee. I do authorize the release of EBook as part
of the sumex CDROM collection.
